Aiden Flora gave Iowa State three rushing touchdowns and two touchdown passes in a 45–42 win over West Virginia. The teams produced 1,095 yards between them, but a late defensive play protected the margin: according to the Associated Press, Beni Ngoyi forced and recovered a fumble with 59 seconds left. Alabama also finished its afternoon with a victory, beating Mississippi State 56–23 as Keelon Russell threw three touchdown passes and ran for another score. Baseball’s Division Series opened with Chicago taking Game 1 in Cleveland 3–0. In the National League, the Dodgers named Tarik Skubal their opening-game starter against Atlanta, with Dylan Dodd assigned the start for the Braves.

The NFL weekend leads into New Orleans’ Monday, October 5 home game against Atlanta at Caesars Superdome. The Saints’ team coverage identifies Kellen Moore and quarterback Tyler Shough in the preparations, with the final injury report part of Saturday’s agenda. Basketball has its own October calendar: Toronto’s announced preseason opener against Miami is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET on October 3 at Videotron Centre in Quebec City, following the Raptors’ September 29–October 2 training camp. College teams are already practicing, too. Rice began its official sessions on September 21 and is scheduled to host Dallas Christian on November 2 to open its season.
