The Dodgers are one victory from the National League Championship Series, while the Padres have earned another chance to extend their season. Both NL Division Series now stand at 2–1, with Los Angeles and Milwaukee holding the leads.

Elsewhere, Troy won a high-scoring Sun Belt matchup, the Warriors and Pelicans recorded NBA preseason victories, and the football and college basketball calendars continued moving toward their next stages.

Dodgers defeat Braves 3–1, take a 2–1 series lead

Los Angeles won Game 3 at Truist Park with a combination Atlanta could not overcome: a long outing from Yoshinobu Yamamoto and two fourth-inning home runs. Kiké Hernández hit a two-run shot off Chris Sale, and Freddie Freeman followed with a solo homer.

MLB.com reported that Yamamoto allowed one run over seven innings and struck out 10, his highest strikeout total in a postseason appearance. Atlanta scored on Drake Baldwin’s fifth-inning groundout, but the Dodgers kept the lead through the final out.

The result gives Los Angeles two opportunities to finish the best-of-five series. Atlanta must win Game 4 to force a deciding fifth game.

Padres defeat Brewers 4–3 to avoid elimination

San Diego finally won a one-run game in this series after losing the first two in Milwaukee. Jake Cronenworth’s fifth-inning homer put the Padres ahead, and Xander Bogaerts added a run in the sixth before helping finish the game on defense.

Michael King, who had started Game 2, returned on one day of rest to pitch the final two innings for a save. The Associated Press reported that Mason Miller was on the paternity list and Adrian Morejon was unavailable with a shoulder issue, leaving San Diego without two key late-inning relievers.

With two runners aboard in the ninth, Bogaerts fielded Christian Yelich’s hard grounder and completed a game-ending double play. Milwaukee still leads 2–1, with Game 4 at Petco Park on Wednesday. AP’s recap also noted that the Brewers’ postseason road losing streak reached 12 games.

Warriors defeat Lakers 124–98 in preseason

Golden State won the preseason matchup at Chase Center. The NBA’s official game summary records a 124–98 final, giving the Warriors another opportunity to evaluate their lineup before regular-season play.

The result belongs to the exhibition schedule, not the regular-season standings. HSW’s takeaway is to keep preseason outcomes separate from conclusions about where either team will finish.

Pelicans defeat Thunder 116–110 in Tulsa

New Orleans recovered from a 67–52 halftime deficit to defeat Oklahoma City at the BOK Center in Tulsa. The Pelicans outscored the Thunder 38–26 in the third quarter and 26–17 in the fourth.

The second-half response gave New Orleans a preseason win against the Thunder. As with Golden State’s result, it does not count toward the regular-season standings.

NFL notebook: Week 5 follows Atlanta’s Monday win

Atlanta’s 45–24 victory over New Orleans completed the Monday night divisional matchup as the NFL turned toward Week 5.

An August 26 ESPN report described a league memo stating that players who return to college football cannot sign with an NFL team during the 2026 season. The report also explained that a player released from an NFL contract remains a free agent rather than becoming eligible for another draft.

College basketball: November openers approach

College basketball remains in its preseason preparation period, with November regular-season games ahead. Published school schedules already identify the opening matchups: UT Arlington, for example, is scheduled to host UNT Dallas on November 2.

For fans reviewing early projections, the distinction matters: preseason expectations are not completed-game results. HSW will keep those forecasts separate from the records teams establish once play begins.
