NBA: The Knicks finally win one and the Rockets close in style
New York avoided a winless preseason on Thursday night, edging Toronto 122-120 at Madison Square Garden in its preseason finale. Jalen Brunson led the Knicks with 20 points, and Karl-Anthony Towns finished with 13 points, 15 rebounds and 9 assists as New York closed the preseason at 1-4. Scottie Barnes scored 23 points for Toronto, and the Raptors rallied with 41 points in the fourth quarter before New York held on at the end. A 2-point win never felt so necessary for a team that spent the week staring at 0-5.
Houston closed its preseason with a 116-89 win over Oklahoma City at the Toyota Center. Alperen Sengun finished with 14 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists in 24 minutes, and Bogdan Bogdanovic scored 15 points off the bench while making 5 three-pointers. The preseason ends across the league on Friday, with Boston at Philadelphia at 7 ET as the headline finale. Philadelphia reshuffled the end of its roster before its finale, waiving Saint Thomas and Duke Miles and signing Cris Carroll and Taye Fields to Exhibit 10 deals. The dress rehearsals end tonight, and the real cast list gets decided this weekend.

MLB: Milwaukee sweeps Los Angeles and waits for a World Series date
Milwaukee completed a four-game sweep of Los Angeles on Thursday night, rallying for a 6-4 win in Game 4 of the National League Championship Series at Dodger Stadium to reach the World Series for the first time since 1982. Los Angeles led 4-0 in the second inning after a run-scoring single from Andy Pages and a three-run home run from Shohei Ohtani. Jake Bauers started the comeback with a two-run double in the fourth inning and tied the game with a bases-loaded walk in the fifth inning. Garrett Mitchell hit a go-ahead home run in the sixth inning, and David Hamilton added a solo home run in the ninth inning off Edwin Diaz for a 6-4 lead. Four Milwaukee pitchers held Los Angeles scoreless over the final seven innings, and Bauers was named the Most Valuable Player of the National League Championship Series. The two-time defending champions are out, and the gamers from Milwaukee are still standing.
The American League race continues on Friday, with Tampa Bay at Cleveland at 6 ET on TBS in Game 4 of the American League Championship Series. Cleveland leads the series 2-1 after its 3-2 win in Game 3 on Thursday. Nick Martinez is scheduled to start for Tampa Bay, and Cleveland had not announced its Game 4 starter in the reports after Game 3. The World Series is scheduled to begin on Friday, October 23, and Milwaukee will host the opening games after finishing with the best regular-season record in baseball. Cleveland and Tampa Bay are playing for the other seat at that table, preferably without needing seven games to find the chair.

NFL: Denver survives in overtime and Sunday loses a starting quarterback in Philadelphia
Denver beat Seattle 17-14 in overtime on Thursday night at Empower Field at Mile High to open Week 6. Wil Lutz kicked a 53-yard field goal with 4:53 left in overtime after Ja'Quan McMillian intercepted Sam Darnold at the Seattle 43-yard line. Denver improved to 4-2, and Seattle fell to 3-3 with its second straight loss. J.K. Dobbins and RJ Harvey rushed for second-quarter touchdowns as Denver built a 14-3 lead, and Seattle rallied in the fourth quarter on a 1-yard touchdown run from George Holani, a two-point conversion and a 34-yard field goal from Jason Myers with 3 seconds left in regulation. Darnold completed 27 of 51 passes for 278 yards with 2 interceptions, Jaxon Smith-Njigba caught 12 passes for 134 yards and Bo Nix completed 17 of 27 passes for 107 yards for Denver. Seattle outgained Denver 353 yards to 168 yards and still lost, which is the football version of winning the argument and losing the game.
Sunday will go ahead without Jalen Hurts after Philadelphia ruled its quarterback out for the game against Carolina because of a blood clot in his leg, with Tanner McKee in line to start for the Eagles. Chicago is moving the other way at quarterback, as Caleb Williams was a full participant in practice for the second straight day on Thursday and is on track to return at Atlanta on Sunday after missing three games with a hamstring injury. Bears running back Kyle Monangai did not practice on Thursday for the second straight day, so the Chicago backfield remains a question even as its quarterback answer gets clearer. Week 6 has already delivered an overtime finish and two quarterback plot twists, and Sunday has not even warmed up yet.

NCAAF: Texas State runs wild, UAB steals one in overtime and Friday brings three more
Texas State produced the wildest Thursday night line in San Marcos, beating Colorado State 66-27 at UFCU Stadium. Texas State set program records with 716 yards of offense and 503 rushing yards. Torrance Burgess Jr. rushed for 224 yards and 4 touchdowns on 24 carries, and Brad Jackson rushed for 181 yards and 3 touchdowns while also throwing a touchdown pass. Colorado State fell to 2-4 with the loss. The scoreboard operator earned every penny of overtime pay without the game ever reaching overtime.
UAB needed the extra period in Birmingham, beating East Carolina 30-17 in overtime after the Pirates led 14-0 early. Ryder Burton drove UAB 93 yards late in regulation and threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Bam McReynolds with 35 seconds left, then ran in the two-point conversion to tie the game 17-17. Burton threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Rod Robinson II in overtime, and Delvon Gulley sealed the win with an 80-yard interception return for a touchdown. Georgia Southern won the third Thursday game, beating Old Dominion 23-15 in Norfolk. Friday keeps the week rolling with Memphis at Tulane at 7:30 ET on ESPN, Washington at Purdue at 8 ET on FOX and Appalachian State at Coastal Carolina at 8 ET on ESPN2. Saturday then brings sixth-ranked Alabama at Tennessee at 3:30 ET on ABC and fourth-ranked Ohio State at fifth-ranked Indiana at 12 ET on FOX, so Friday night is only the appetizer with an attitude.

CBB: Arizona tops the Big 12 poll and the race behind the Wildcats looks crowded
The Big 12 released its preseason coaches poll on Thursday and picked Arizona to repeat as league champion. Arizona finished first with 220 points and 12 first-place votes, and Houston finished second with 214 points and 4 first-place votes. Kansas was picked third with 186 points, Iowa State was fourth with 181 points and Texas Tech was fifth with 180 points. Arizona center Motiejus Krivas was named Preseason Player of the Year, Arizona State forward Paulius Murauskas was named Preseason Newcomer of the Year and Kansas freshman Tyran Stokes was named Preseason Freshman of the Year. Iowa State guard Tamin Lipsey was named to the preseason All-Big 12 team, giving the Cyclones a headline of their own in a crowded top five. Six points separated first from second and one point separated fourth from fifth, so the poll managed to be both decisive and completely up for grabs at the same time.
