NBA: Boston stays perfect and Miami turns its gym into a track meet

The Celtics improved to 3-0 in the preseason with a 114-93 win over the Charlotte Hornets at TD Garden on Wednesday night. Jayson Tatum led Boston with 19 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists in three quarters of work. Neemias Queta added 16 points and Luka Garza added 14 points as the Boston frontcourt controlled the night. Derrick White picked up a leg knock while contesting a drive and his status will bear watching before the preseason finale. Boston closes the preseason on Friday at Philadelphia.

Miami delivered the wildest scoreline of the night with a 144-128 win over the Brooklyn Nets at the Kaseya Center. Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 20 points and grabbed 15 rebounds for the Heat in the win. Miami scored 43 points in the third quarter and won despite playing without Bam Adebayo, who sat out with a groin issue. Michael Porter Jr. scored 27 points for Brooklyn and the loss was the first of the preseason for the Nets, who finished the exhibition schedule at 3-1. Preseason defense remains strictly optional in South Florida.

The rest of Wednesday finished with the Detroit Pistons beating the Minnesota Timberwolves 128-106 in Minneapolis and the San Antonio Spurs beating the Phoenix Suns 123-103 in San Antonio. Victor Wembanyama scored 19 points for the Spurs and De’Aaron Fox made his preseason debut for San Antonio after dealing with hip tightness. Phoenix rested six regulars and guard Luke Kennard left in the second quarter with a sore left knee and did not return. The Chicago Bulls beat the Milwaukee Bucks 125-104 in Milwaukee while the Bucks rested eight regulars. The New Orleans Pelicans edged the Dallas Mavericks 101-97 in Dallas and the Los Angeles Clippers closed their preseason with a 122-110 win over the Denver Nuggets after trailing by 15 points early. Two games are scheduled for Thursday, with Toronto at New York at 7:30 ET and Oklahoma City at Houston at 8:30 ET on NBA TV. Toronto won the first meeting between the clubs 148-98 on Tuesday, so the Knicks have roughly 50 reasons to care about a preseason rematch.

MLB: Milwaukee moves to the brink and Thursday turns into a doubleheader

The Milwaukee Brewers beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-2 in Game 3 of the National League Championship Series on Wednesday night at Dodger Stadium and took a 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven series. Jackson Chourio opened the game with a home run on the first pitch from Blake Snell to give Milwaukee an early lead. Rookie left-hander Robert Gasser held Los Angeles scoreless over five innings and allowed three hits. Will Smith hit a two-run double in the sixth inning to put the Dodgers ahead 2-1 and the lead lasted only until the seventh inning, when Jake Bauers and Garrett Mitchell hit back-to-back home runs for Milwaukee. Shohei Ohtani went 1-for-2 with a walk and a hit-by-pitch after moving to sixth in the Los Angeles batting order and the Dodgers finished with five hits. Milwaukee is 1 win away from the second World Series appearance in franchise history and the first since 1982, while Los Angeles is trying to avoid elimination after winning the last two World Series titles. The Dodgers now need four straight wins to keep the three-peat dream alive, which is a lovely plan right up until the math shows up.

Thursday brings both series back to the field after Major League Baseball moved the start times because of forecasted rain in Cleveland. The Tampa Bay Rays and Cleveland Guardians open the day with Game 3 of the American League Championship Series at 1 ET at Progressive Field on TBS, truTV and HBO Max. The series is tied 1-1 after Cleveland won Game 1 by a 7-3 score and Tampa Bay won Game 2 by a 3-1 score. The Brewers and Dodgers then play Game 4 of the National League Championship Series at 8 ET at Dodger Stadium, where a Milwaukee win would complete the sweep and send the Brewers to the World Series. Cleveland gets a lunchtime pennant race and Los Angeles gets an elimination game for dessert.

NFL: Thursday night brings a 3-2 standoff in Denver

Week 6 opens on Thursday night with the Seattle Seahawks at the Denver Broncos at 8:15 ET on Prime Video from Empower Field at Mile High. Both teams enter at 3-2 and the winner leaves the night with a fourth win and early control of its playoff positioning. Seattle is 1-1 on the road this season and Denver is 2-0 at home. Seattle arrives after a 32-29 loss to the San Francisco 49ers, while Denver returns home after a 23-17 win over the Los Angeles Chargers. Seattle has scored 134 points through five games and Denver has scored 97 points, so the visiting offense has been the louder one so far. Jaxon Smith-Njigba leads Seattle with 583 receiving yards and Sam Darnold has thrown for 755 yards, while Bo Nix has thrown for 942 yards for Denver. Somebody leaves the altitude with bragging rights and somebody leaves blaming the short week, as tradition demands.

The weekend still has fresh drama to chase from Monday night, when the Buffalo Bills beat the Los Angeles Rams 37-34 in overtime at SoFi Stadium. Josh Allen threw for 210 yards and ran for 121 yards in the win. Greg Rousseau blocked a Rams field goal attempt in overtime and Tyler Bass kicked a 45-yard field goal with 1:55 left in the extra period to end the game. Matthew Stafford threw for 383 yards and three touchdowns for Los Angeles in the loss. Buffalo improved to 4-1 and stayed in first place in the AFC East, while the Rams fell to 2-3. Week 6 continues on Sunday with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Houston Texans scheduled in London, so set the early alarm if your Sunday now starts with coffee and a kickoff from another continent.

NCAAF: A walk-off field goal on Wednesday and a monster Saturday ahead

Wednesday night delivered a finish worth staying up for as Missouri State beat Kennesaw State 24-21 in Springfield on a 20-yard field goal from Yousef Obeid as time expired. The win was the first Conference USA victory of the season for Missouri State, which improved to 2-4 overall and 1-1 in conference play. Kennesaw State fell to 1-5 overall and 0-2 in conference play with the loss. Western Kentucky won the other Wednesday game by a 16-3 score at Sam Houston, holding the Bearkats without a touchdown. Western Kentucky improved to 3-4 overall and 2-1 in Conference USA play, while Sam Houston fell to 1-5 overall and 0-2 in conference play. Midweek football rarely promises much and then a kicker from 20 yards out steals the whole evening anyway.

Three games are scheduled for Thursday night, with East Carolina at UAB at 7:30 ET, Georgia Southern at Old Dominion at 7:30 ET and Colorado State at Texas State at 8 ET. The real avalanche lands on Saturday, October 17, when fourth-ranked Ohio State visits fifth-ranked Indiana at 12 ET, top-ranked Georgia hosts Auburn at 3:30 ET and sixth-ranked Alabama visits 14th-ranked Tennessee at 3:30 ET. The Saturday night window brings Florida State at third-ranked Miami at 7 ET and second-ranked Notre Dame at eighth-ranked BYU at 7:30 ET. Georgia took the top ranking after a 20-17 win at Alabama on Saturday and Texas fell to seventh after a 27-24 loss to Oklahoma. Clear the calendar, charge the remote and apologize to your Saturday plans in advance.

CBB: Duke leads the ACC poll and the Big Sky picks a familiar favorite

The Atlantic Coast Conference released its preseason poll on October 13 and the media picked Duke to win a third straight conference championship. Duke received 45 first-place votes and 861 points to top the 18-team poll. Virginia finished second with 778 points, Louisville finished third with 758 points and Miami finished fourth with 753 points. North Carolina was picked fifth with 658 points entering its first season under head coach Michael Malone, and the Tar Heels bring 11 newcomers to the roster with no players selected to the preseason All-ACC teams. Virginia forward Thijs De Ridder was named Preseason ACC Player of the Year and Duke newcomer Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje was named Preseason ACC Rookie of the Year. The favorite wears blue, the challenger from Virginia owns the top individual honor and the league race looks crowded enough to cause arguments before the first real game even arrives.

The Big Sky Conference added its own preseason picture this week, with Montana State picked to win the league in both the coaches poll and the media poll. Utah Tech was picked seventh in both polls as the program joins the league this season. Utah Tech forward Ethan Potter was named to the Preseason Big Sky All-Conference Team on October 14 after averaging 16.8 points and 7.8 rebounds per game last season. Potter led the Western Athletic Conference in rebounding and field goal percentage last season at 59.8 percent and set a program record with 572 points in a season. The regular season begins on Monday, November 2, when Utah Tech opens at New Mexico. Poll season is the one stretch of the year when every fan base is undefeated and every voter is somehow wrong at the same time.
