NBA: Opening night delivered three statements

The 2026-27 regular season opened Tuesday with a tripleheader, and every favorite storyline took a hit before the night was over. Detroit beat Boston 121-113 in the first game of the season, storming back after Boston built a lead that reached 22 points. Duncan Robinson scored 21 points for the Pistons, with 15 of those points coming in the fourth quarter, and Detroit ran off 23 straight points to flip the game. Cade Cunningham and Jalen Duren scored 22 points each for Detroit, and Javonte Green added 19 points off the bench. Paul George scored a game-high 38 points in his Celtics debut, and Jayson Tatum was held to 13 points on 6-for-23 shooting while handing out 11 assists.

Philadelphia spoiled the championship celebration in New York, beating the Knicks 106-100 after New York raised its banner and received its rings. Tyrese Maxey led Philadelphia with 28 points, and Jaylen Brown scored 19 points with 8 rebounds and 6 assists in his 76ers debut. LeBron James added 14 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists in his first game for Philadelphia, and Joel Embiid finished with 13 points, 11 rebounds and 6 assists. Jalen Brunson led New York with 21 points, and Karl-Anthony Towns added 19 points and 12 rebounds in the loss.

Oklahoma City closed the night with a 116-104 win at San Antonio in a rematch of last season's Western Conference finals. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led the Thunder with 32 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists, and Oklahoma City led by as many as 26 points. Victor Wembanyama finished with 12 points, 13 rebounds and 6 blocks for the Spurs after missing his first 12 shots from the field. The schedule gets crowded tonight with 11 games scheduled for Wednesday, October 21. Minnesota visits Miami at 7:30 ET on ESPN, with Giannis Antetokounmpo set for his Miami debut and LaMelo Ball set for his first game with Minnesota, and Golden State visits the Los Angeles Lakers at 10 ET on ESPN to close the national doubleheader. Opening night was supposed to sort the contenders, and instead it just made the line longer.

MLB: Two days from a first-time champion series

There is no game today, and the wait is the story with the World Series set to open Friday, October 23 at 8 ET in Milwaukee. The Brewers host the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 1 at American Family Field, Game 2 follows Saturday in Milwaukee, and the series shifts to Tampa Bay for Game 3 on Monday, October 26. Milwaukee swept Los Angeles 4-0 in the National League Championship Series, and Tampa Bay beat Cleveland 4-2 in the American League Championship Series. The Rays closed out Cleveland 7-3 in Game 6 on Monday, with Yandy Diaz hitting a two-run home run in the eighth inning to stretch the lead.

The matchup guarantees a first-time champion. Milwaukee is in the World Series for the second time and for the first time since 1982, and Tampa Bay is in the World Series for the third time. The biggest roster question left is Brandon Woodruff for Milwaukee. Woodruff threw 23 pitches in live batting practice on Tuesday, his first time facing hitters since a right shoulder injury, and his fastball sat at 90-92 miles per hour in the session. Woodruff last appeared in a game on July 4, no roster decision had been announced as of Tuesday night, and reports around the team said an addition to the World Series roster remained unlikely, with a relief role the only realistic fit if he is carried. Two small-market teams, two rosters built the hard way, and one trophy that has never lived in either city — October saved its strangest pairing for last.

NFL: The Rams lose two starters in one afternoon

Los Angeles made the injury news official on Tuesday, placing wide receiver Davante Adams and nose tackle Poona Ford on injured reserve. Adams is expected to miss 6-10 weeks with a ruptured hamstring suffered in Sunday's loss to Arizona, and he leaves with 30 catches for 480 yards and 4 touchdowns this season. Ford will miss the rest of the season with a ruptured triceps injury. The Rams also signed kicker Brandon McManus on Tuesday, and McManus replaces Blake Grupe, who was placed on injured reserve on Monday after tearing an anterior cruciate ligament.

Help could be coming back elsewhere in the league. Houston waived linebacker Jamal Hill on Tuesday, a move that clears space ahead of the expected return of wide receiver Tank Dell from injured reserve. Dell has not appeared in a game since Week 16 of the 2024 season. Week 7 opens Thursday, October 22, when New England visits Chicago at 8:15 ET. The Rams are running out of healthy stars, and the rest of the league is running out of patience waiting for its own to return.

NCAAF: Week 8 builds toward a ranked Saturday night

Week 8 rolls on tonight with New Mexico State at Sam Houston scheduled for 8 ET, and the real weight of the week lands Saturday, October 24. Top-ranked Miami hosts Pittsburgh at 12 ET, and eighteenth-ranked LSU visits Auburn at 12 ET to open the Saturday slate. Texas A&M visits thirteenth-ranked Alabama at 3:30 ET, and eleventh-ranked Tennessee visits South Carolina at 3:30 ET in the afternoon window.

The night brings two ranked matchups that can reshape the playoff picture. Seventh-ranked Ole Miss visits nineteenth-ranked Texas at 7:30 ET, and fourteenth-ranked Houston visits tenth-ranked Utah at 10:15 ET to close the day. Sixth-ranked Indiana also visits Michigan at 12 ET on Saturday, and second-ranked BYU visits UCF at 3:30 ET. Midweek football is the appetizer, and Saturday is serving the whole menu at once.

CBB: Florida starts on top, and the field is loaded behind the Gators

The preseason Associated Press Top 25 is out, and Florida opens the 2026-27 season ranked first for the first time since the 2006-07 season. Florida received 47 of the 59 first-place votes, and the Gators return four of five starters from a team that went 16-2 in Southeastern Conference play last season. Duke is ranked second with 10 first-place votes, Illinois is ranked third with the other 2 first-place votes, and Connecticut and Arizona round out the top five.

The depth behind the top five is the bigger takeaway for a season that has not tipped off yet. Michigan State, Texas, Tennessee, Virginia and Houston complete the top ten in that order, and defending national champion Michigan opens ranked sixteenth after losing its coach and four of five starters to the National Basketball Association. The Southeastern Conference placed seven teams in the preseason poll, the Big 12 placed six teams, and Gonzaga is the only team outside the five biggest conferences in the poll, opening ranked fifteenth after moving to the rebuilt Pac-12. Purdue starts outside the poll, snapping a streak of 79 straight weeks in the Top 25. The ballots are in, the excuses are gone, and November cannot get here fast enough.

That is the Morning Edition. Five sports, zero filler. See you at halftime.
