NBA: Opening night is here, and the tripleheader wastes no time

The 2026-27 NBA season opens today with a tripleheader on NBC and Peacock, and the league stacked the deck for day one. Boston visits Detroit at 3 ET to start the run, and Jayson Tatum and the new-look Celtics draw Cade Cunningham and a Pistons team that finished as the top seed in the Eastern Conference last season. Philadelphia visits New York at 7 ET, where the Knicks will receive their championship rings and raise their first banner since 1973 before LeBron James and Jaylen Brown make their regular season debuts for the 76ers. Oklahoma City closes the night at San Antonio at 9:30 ET, and the matchup is a rematch of the seven-game Western Conference finals from last season between Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Victor Wembanyama.

The injury reports add the fine print to a loud day. Boston listed only guard Devin Carter as out for the opener as he deals with mononucleosis, while Philadelphia listed forward Dean Wade as questionable with a left ankle sprain, guard Anfernee Simons as questionable with left hamstring tightness and center Adem Bona as questionable with a left foot sprain, with forward Dominick Barlow, center Ariel Hukporti and center Tacko Fall all out. San Antonio forward Tobias Harris is out with a strained left calf, and the absence delays his official Spurs debut by at least one game. The banners, the debuts and the rematch all land on the same Tuesday, and the league could not have drawn up a louder first day if it tried.

Charlotte spent the final day before the season making its future official, as the Hornets agreed with forward Brandon Miller on a five-year extension worth 209 million dollars on Monday. Miller averaged 20.2 points, 4.9 rebounds and 3.3 assists last season, and the deal locks in the second overall pick from the 2023 draft as the centerpiece of a rebuild that already sent LaMelo Ball out of town during the summer. Charlotte opens its season on Wednesday at Brooklyn, and Miller now carries the franchise tag in every way except the paperwork. The Hornets picked their guy, paid their guy, and now get to find out if their guy can drag them up the standings.

MLB: Tampa Bay slams the pennant door, and a first-time champion is guaranteed

Tampa Bay finished the American League Championship Series on Monday night, as the Rays beat Cleveland 7-3 in Game 6 at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg to win the series 4-2. The trip is the third World Series appearance in franchise history and the first since the 2020 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Richie Palacios opened the scoring with a two-run double in the second inning, and starting pitcher Freddy Peralta carried the night from there with 5 1/3 innings of one-run baseball.

The late innings nearly turned the celebration into a stomach ache. Junior Caminero hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning to stretch the lead to 5-1, and Cleveland answered with 2 runs in the eighth inning to close within 5-3 and load the bases. Reliever Kevin Kelly struck out Brayan Rocchio to end the threat, and Yandy Díaz followed with a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to restore the margin at 7-3. Peralta was named the Most Valuable Player of the series after he allowed 1 run across 12 innings in 3 outings during the series, and a pitcher the New York Mets moved on from in July ended October holding the trophy on the mound in St. Petersburg.

The World Series opens on Friday, October 23, with Game 1 set for 8 ET in Milwaukee on FOX. The Brewers swept the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship Series and return to the World Series for the first time since 1982, and neither Milwaukee nor Tampa Bay has ever won the World Series. That single fact turns this matchup into a history lesson with a trophy at the end, because the 2026 season will crown a first-time champion no matter which dugout celebrates last. Two franchises, zero rings between them, and somebody finally gets to retire the almost by Halloween.

NFL: San Francisco survives the rally, and Washington leaves with a bigger worry

San Francisco closed Week 6 with a 23-17 win over Washington on Monday night at Levi's Stadium, and the 49ers improved to 6-0 for the first time since 2019. Brock Purdy completed 21 of 29 passes for 264 yards and a touchdown, and Christian McCaffrey rushed for 64 yards and 2 touchdowns while adding 9 catches for 53 yards. George Kittle caught 5 passes for 69 yards and a touchdown, and San Francisco built a 23-3 lead late in the third quarter before the game turned into a fourth-quarter stress test.

Washington scored 14 unanswered points to make the finish uncomfortable. Jayden Daniels completed 29 of 40 passes for 300 yards and 2 touchdowns, and the Commanders reached the San Francisco 17-yard line with 2 minutes remaining before a fourth-down pass to Treylon Burks was broken up. Washington got one final chance in the closing seconds, and the drive ended with Daniels sacked on the final play as the Commanders fell to 1-4-1 with a third straight winless week. A comeback that close deserves a handshake, and instead it gets a plane ride home with the standings getting heavier by the week.

The loss may cost Washington far more than a game. Wide receiver Terry McLaurin was carted off in the first quarter with a left knee injury after he caught 1 pass for 27 yards, and head coach Dan Quinn said after the game that the concern is the injury could be significant, with scans scheduled for Tuesday and no official diagnosis announced yet. McLaurin has 15 catches for 230 yards and 1 touchdown in 5 games this season, and San Francisco lost a receiver of its own as Mike Evans aggravated his Achilles injury after 3 catches for 94 yards and missed the second half. Washington heads into its bye week before it hosts Philadelphia on November 1, and Week 7 opens on Thursday with New England at Chicago at 8:15 ET on Prime Video. The 49ers get to enjoy the view from 6-0, and the Commanders get a bye week that suddenly feels like a hospital waiting room with better catering.

NCAAF: Week 8 starts on a Tuesday, because college football never sleeps

Week 8 opens tonight with three games on national television, and the midweek appetizer slate has become a permanent part of the college football calendar. Middle Tennessee visits FIU at 7 ET on CBS Sports Network, and Missouri State visits Delaware at 7 ET on ESPNU. South Alabama visits Marshall at 7:30 ET on ESPN2 to close the night, and three fan bases get their Saturday fix four days early.

The weekend main event waits in Austin, where seventh-ranked Ole Miss visits nineteenth-ranked Texas on Saturday at 7:30 ET on ABC. Texas confirmed on Monday that Arch Manning remains its starting quarterback, and Manning has thrown for 1,295 yards with 11 touchdowns and 5 interceptions across 6 games while the Longhorns have slid to 4-2 with 2 straight losses. The rest of the Saturday board is loaded as well, with Texas A&M visiting thirteenth-ranked Alabama at 3:30 ET on ABC, sixth-ranked Indiana visiting Michigan at 12 ET on FOX and second-ranked BYU visiting UCF at 3:30 ET on FOX. Tuesday night football in Huntington and Miami is a strange little gift, and Saturday in Austin is the kind of game that rearranges a season by dinner time.

CBB: Exhibition season serves up two top-10 appetizers tonight

The games do not count yet, and nobody told the schedule makers to act like it. Second-ranked Duke hosts eighth-ranked Tennessee tonight at Cameron Indoor Stadium, with tip-off set for 7 ET on ACC Network. Tennessee lost its first exhibition 86-70 to Xavier on October 15, and the Volunteers get a far louder defensive test in Durham as the final tune-ups roll on.

Sixth-ranked Michigan State hosts fourth-ranked Connecticut tonight at the Breslin Center, with tip-off set for 7 ET and streaming on B1G+. The programs met in an exhibition last preseason and again in the Sweet 16 in March, and Tom Izzo and Dan Hurley have turned October into an annual measuring stick for two rosters with March ambitions. Exhibitions with this much star power on both benches are basically regular season games wearing a fake mustache, and nobody watching will care about the disguise.

The strangest tip-off of the season is still on deck. Notre Dame and Villanova will open the regular season on November 1 in Rome, with the men's game at Palazzo dello Sport scheduled for Sunday morning United States time and the women's game between the same schools following it. Villanova was picked third in the Big East preseason coaches poll behind only Connecticut and St. John's, and the Wildcats get an Italian homecoming built into opening day. College basketball starts its season in Rome this year, and the sport's sense of drama remains undefeated.

That's the Morning Edition. Five sports, zero filler. See you at halftime.
