NBA: Roster deadline weekend turned into a league-wide pink-slip party
Boston finalized its opening-night roster ahead of the Monday deadline at 5 ET, and the headline move was a bet on upside. The Celtics waived Tucker DeVries, Gabe McGlothan, Hayden Gray and Milos Uzan, and they converted the Exhibit 10 deal of Devin Carter into a two-way contract. Boston will carry 14 players on standard contracts and three players on two-way deals, and the Celtics will leave the 15th standard roster spot open for the start of the season.
The cuts landed everywhere else too, because the deadline waits for nobody. Chicago waived Orlando Robinson, Jalen Bridges, Brandon Boston Jr. and Drew Peterson on Saturday, and the Bulls plan to keep their 15th standard roster spot open as well. Minnesota waived five players on Saturday, including Drew Timme, and Timme went out swinging with 18 points, seven rebounds and three assists in 27 minutes in the preseason finale against Chicago on Friday. The regular season opens on Tuesday, October 20, and the league just reminded camp hopefuls everywhere that October giveth minutes and October taketh them away.

MLB: Game 5 is underway in Cleveland and the pennant pressure is real
Game 5 of the American League Championship Series is underway on Sunday evening at Progressive Field in Cleveland, with first pitch at 5:08 ET and the series tied at 2-2. Tampa Bay started Drew Rasmussen, and Cleveland started Parker Messick. Messick labored through a long first inning as Tampa Bay took an early lead in a game that had not reached a final score at publication time. The two clubs have alternated wins through the first four games, and Tampa Bay evened the series on Saturday with a 7-3 win in Game 4.
The winner of Game 5 will need one more win to reach the World Series, and the loser will face elimination in Game 6 on Monday in St. Petersburg at 8 ET. A deciding Game 7, if it becomes necessary, is scheduled for Tuesday in St. Petersburg at 8 ET. Milwaukee waits on the other side after sweeping Los Angeles in the National League Championship Series, and the World Series is scheduled to begin on Friday, October 23 in Milwaukee. Cleveland and Tampa Bay get no travel day and no breathing room, which is exactly how a championship series should feel in late October.

NFL: London went to the last kick and the early window never calmed down
Houston beat Jacksonville 34-31 at Wembley Stadium in London, and Ka'imi Fairbairn won it with a 49-yard field goal as time expired. C. J. Stroud threw for 312 yards and three touchdowns for Houston, and Trevor Lawrence threw for 306 yards and four touchdowns for Jacksonville. Travis Hunter caught a touchdown pass and recorded an interception in the same game, and Houston improved to 2-4 while Jacksonville fell to 4-2 after its three-game winning streak ended.
Chicago beat Atlanta 31-23 in the return of Caleb Williams, who completed 30 of 36 passes for 305 yards and one touchdown after he missed three games. D'Andre Swift ran for two touchdowns for the Bears, and Chicago improved to 4-2 while Atlanta fell to 2-4. Atlanta rallied late after it trailed 31-7, and Michael Penix Jr. finished with 225 passing yards and three touchdowns in the loss. The serious news from Atlanta came after the game, as the Falcons said rookie linebacker Kendal Daniels is alert and has movement in all of his extremities after he was carted off with a neck injury in the third quarter and taken to Grady Memorial Hospital for further evaluation, and head coach Kevin Stefanski said the initial reports after the game were good.
Carolina beat Philadelphia 25-14, and Bryce Young threw for 281 yards and two touchdowns while Chuba Hubbard ran for 120 yards and one touchdown on 28 carries. Both Young touchdown passes went to Tommy Tremble, and Tanner McKee threw for 215 yards and one touchdown for Philadelphia in the loss. Philadelphia fell to 2-4 with its fourth straight loss, and Carolina improved to 3-2. Cleveland beat Baltimore 13-10 on a 37-yard field goal from Andre Szmyt as time expired, and the Browns moved to 4-2 and into a share of first place in the AFC North. Pittsburgh beat Tampa Bay 26-19 in overtime on a 6-yard touchdown pass from Aaron Rodgers to Germie Bernard, and Tennessee earned its first win of the season with a 26-20 comeback win at Indianapolis after the Titans trailed 13-0 at halftime. Joey Slye hit the go-ahead 49-yard field goal with 2:03 left for Tennessee, and the Titans defense recorded six sacks in the win. The late window was still in progress at publication time. Dallas visits Green Bay on Sunday night at 8:20 ET on NBC, with Dallas at 2-3 and Green Bay at 3-2, and Monday night brings Washington at San Francisco at 8:15 ET. Sunday started with a walk-off kick in London and somehow still saved its weirdest division math for the nightcap.

NCAAF: Miami is first, BYU is second and the new AP poll moved everybody
The new Associated Press Top 25 poll landed on Sunday, and Miami took the top spot for the first time since 2002. Miami received 40 first-place votes, BYU climbed to second with 20 first-place votes, and Ohio State placed third with nine first-place votes after the chaotic Saturday that saw five of the top seven teams lose. Notre Dame placed fourth in the new poll, Georgia fell to fifth, Indiana placed sixth, and Ole Miss placed seventh. Texas Tech, UCLA and Utah rounded out the top ten in that order.
The fallout below the top ten told the rest of the story. Tennessee placed 11th, Kentucky placed 12th, and Alabama fell to 13th after its loss at Tennessee. Texas dropped 12 places to 19th after its loss at Florida, and Florida re-entered the poll at 20th after it had fallen out the previous week. Nine Southeastern Conference teams landed in the new top 25, and the poll reshuffled so completely after Saturday that the voters basically needed a new whiteboard, a fresh marker and a long Sunday to sort it out.

CBB: Baylor beat Florida in overtime and the exhibition still stung
Baylor beat Florida 82-76 in overtime in a men's basketball exhibition game on Sunday in Jacksonville, and the result does not count in the standings even if Florida will feel it in practice this week. Sophomore guard Kayden Mingo led Baylor with 31 points, and nine of those points came in overtime. Mingo added eight rebounds and four assists, and he hit the late 3-pointer in overtime that gave Baylor a five-point cushion with 37 seconds left.
Florida shot 34.7 percent overall and made only four of its 29 attempts from 3-point range in the loss. Thomas Haugh led Florida with 19 points, Rueben Chinyelu added 13 points and 15 rebounds, and Alex Condon added 13 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Florida plays one more exhibition game at home against Stetson on Tuesday, October 27 before the regular season begins, and Baylor heads to Illinois for an exhibition game on Friday, October 23. An exhibition loss in October costs a team nothing in the standings and absolutely everything in the film room on Monday morning.
That's the Evening Edition. Five sports, zero filler. See you in the morning.
