Celtics agree to two-year extension with Payton Pritchard
The Boston Celtics have agreed to a two-year contract extension worth $44.2 million with guard Payton Pritchard, according to reporting published Tuesday by ESPN. Agents Austin Brown and Max Saidman told ESPN about the agreement on Tuesday. Reuters reported the same terms on Tuesday. At publication time, the deal remained a reported agreement; no official Celtics announcement appeared in the reporting checked for this edition.
The extension carries a mutual option for the 2029–30 season, and either Pritchard or Boston can opt in for that final season. The new money begins in the 2028–29 season because Pritchard’s current contract runs through the 2027–28 season. A salary breakdown carried by NBC Sports Boston put the first extension season at $21.2 million and the mutual option season at $22.9 million. Hoops Rumors reported that Pritchard faced an October 19 deadline to finalize a new deal in this extension window.
Pritchard won Sixth Man of the Year honors for the 2024–25 season and was part of Boston’s championship team in 2024. He delivered the best season of his six-year career in 2025–26 with career-high marks of 17 points, 5.2 assists, and 3.9 rebounds per game. He played 79 games and made 50 starts last season after totaling 17 starts across his first five seasons. Boston selected Pritchard 26th overall in the 2020 NBA Draft out of Oregon, and he has played his entire career with the Celtics.
Boston opens the 2026–27 regular season on Tuesday, October 20 against the Pistons in Detroit. A Sixth Man of the Year winner just got paid like a cornerstone, and Boston has its spark plug secured before the new season even tips off.
