Eagles Quarterback Jalen Hurts Out for the Season After Blood Clots Found in His Lungs

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts will miss the rest of the 2026 season after further imaging over the weekend found multiple blood clots in his lungs. Reports on Monday put the treatment timeline at three months or longer, a span that runs into January and ends any realistic path back this season. A joint statement from the Eagles and his agent Nicole Lynn on Monday gave the updated diagnosis and the treatment plan behind the season-ending timeline.

The updated diagnosis is a deep vein thrombosis as well as bilateral pulmonary emboli, meaning clots were found in both lungs. Hurts, 28, is clinically stable and has no significant functional limitations, and his treatment is expected to involve blood thinners only. He will not be allowed to take part in any contact activities, including football, while he remains on that medication.

The case began in London, where specialists first diagnosed Hurts with a superficial vein thrombosis in his left calf after an ultrasound on Saturday, October 10. He played the next day against Jacksonville and completed 21 of 40 passes for 220 yards and 1 touchdown in a 19-17 loss, and further testing and monitoring in the days after the return flight produced the more serious diagnosis. The Eagles placed Hurts on injured reserve on Saturday, October 17.

The outlook shared in the joint statement is a strong one, with a very good prognosis, a full recovery expected, and no long-term effects anticipated. Hurts is expected to resume contact football activities once he is off the blood thinners, and he will remain active around the team and continue to condition in the meantime. The immediate football cost is still enormous, because a 2-4 Philadelphia team now has to finish its season without its franchise quarterback.

Tanner McKee started in place of Hurts on Sunday and completed 26 of 45 passes for 215 yards and 1 touchdown in a 25-14 loss to the Carolina Panthers. McKee remains the Eagles starter going forward, taking over an offense that has already dropped four straight games. Philadelphia now has to chase a turnaround with its backup under center while its starter focuses on a recovery measured in months, not weeks.
