Angels Decline Option on Manager Kurt Suzuki After First 100-Loss Season in Franchise History
The Los Angeles Angels announced on Wednesday that the club has declined the option in manager Kurt Suzuki's contract and will search for a new manager and coaching staff for the 2027 season. The decision ends the Suzuki tenure after one season in charge of the club. Suzuki has been offered a chance to stay with the organization as a special assistant, and the club did not announce whether he has accepted that offer.
Los Angeles finished 62-100 in 2026, the first 100-loss season in franchise history. The Angels finished last in the American League West and closed the year with 11 consecutive losing seasons and 12 straight seasons without a playoff berth, both the longest active streaks of their kind in the major leagues.
Suzuki had never managed at any level before taking the job. He ended his 16-year major league playing career as a catcher with the Angels in the 2021-22 seasons, then spent 3 seasons as a special assistant to general manager Perry Minasian before Minasian gave him the manager job. Minasian was fired in June, and baseball operations consultant John Mozeliak stepped in on a temporary basis to run the front office.
Mozeliak made the decision in coordination with Kroenke Sports & Entertainment, which reached a deal on September 1 to purchase controlling ownership of the club from Arte Moreno in a sale that is not expected to close until next year. Mozeliak said the 2026 record was not a true reflection of the ability Suzuki showed as a manager and praised the respect Suzuki earned inside the clubhouse during a difficult season.
The replacement will be the seventh manager, including interim managers, to lead the Angels in 9 seasons since the club parted with Mike Scioscia after the 2018 season. The vacancy is the third current managerial opening in the American League West, alongside Seattle and Houston. The rest of the Suzuki coaching staff is not expected to return in the same roles, although some staff members have been offered other positions in the organization.
