Kristaps Porzingis Reportedly Contemplating His Future in Basketball as Warriors Explore Trade Routes
Reports on Wednesday said Golden State has begun exploring trade routes for center Kristaps Porzingis, who is out indefinitely with recurring symptoms from postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome and is seriously contemplating his future in basketball. Stepping away from basketball for good is a possible outcome if his recovery does not produce a breakthrough. No trade has been completed, and no retirement decision has been announced.
Porzingis is 31 years old and was lined up as the projected starting center for Golden State this season. He missed all of training camp and all of the preseason, and he did not travel with the team for its season opener at the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday night, with tipoff set for 10 ET. Golden State announced on October 14 that he would remain out indefinitely because of the same health matter, that the details of his meeting with general manager Mike Dunleavy and vice president of player health and performance Rick Celebrini would stay private, and that he would remain around the team.
The recent reporting adds a harder turn to that absence. Porzingis has not returned to the team facility since that meeting, and his contact with the club has stayed limited while he remains on an indefinite leave. He first revealed the postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome diagnosis last year, and the condition can bring bouts of dizziness, fatigue and brain fog. Head coach Steve Kerr has stayed in contact with Porzingis in recent weeks and has put support for his well-being ahead of any basketball timeline.
Golden State acquired Porzingis from Atlanta in February in the trade that sent Jonathan Kuminga and Buddy Hield to the Hawks, and he played 15 games for the Warriors last season. Across 32 total games for Atlanta and Golden State last season, he averaged 16.7 points, 5.2 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.2 blocks in 24.0 minutes per game. He signed a two-year extension worth 40 million dollars in June, with 20 million dollars due this season and only 3 million dollars of the second season guaranteed, a structure that makes the contract function much like an expiring deal and keeps him eligible to be traded.
That contract structure is why a trade exploration is possible even with his health unresolved, because an acquiring team could treat the deal mainly as salary flexibility and Golden State could pair the contract with draft assets in a larger move. His absence leaves Draymond Green and Al Horford carrying the center minutes for a Warriors team that opens its season on Wednesday night without its planned starter and with no timetable for his return. The basketball question is now secondary to a career question that Porzingis and the Warriors have not answered.
