Eagles Place Jalen Hurts on Injured Reserve, Out at Least 4 Games With Blood Clot
The Philadelphia Eagles announced on Saturday that they have placed quarterback Jalen Hurts on injured reserve due to the superficial blood clot in his calf. The official announcement reversed the direction reported earlier on Saturday, when the team was not planning an injured reserve move for its starting quarterback. The injured reserve placement means Hurts will miss at least 4 games, and no firm return date has been set beyond that minimum absence.
The injury traces back to October 4, when Hurts was cleated in the calf during the game against the Los Angeles Rams and later sought treatment on October 8. An ultrasound in London revealed the superficial blood clot, and team medical staff and doctors in London concluded that Hurts could safely play against Jacksonville. Hurts played in that game, a 19-17 loss, and a follow-up ultrasound on Wednesday evening revealed movement in the small blood clot. Philadelphia ruled Hurts out on Thursday for the Carolina game, and consultations with doctors and experts that continued into Saturday led to the injured reserve decision.
The absence lands in the middle of the NFC East race for a Philadelphia team that sits at 2-3 after 3 straight losses. Hurts will miss games against the Carolina Panthers, the Dallas Cowboys, the Washington Commanders, and the New York Giants before the Philadelphia bye week. The earliest Hurts will be eligible to return is Week 11 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, and that date marks eligibility rather than a guaranteed return. Hurts has thrown for 933 yards and 8 touchdowns this season.
Tanner McKee is set to start on Sunday when the Carolina Panthers visit Lincoln Financial Field, in what will be the third start of his career. The other quarterbacks on the Philadelphia roster are rookie Cole Payton and Joe Milton, who was signed off the practice squad of the Dallas Cowboys. Philadelphia used the open roster spot from the Hurts move to sign running back Jaydon Blue from its practice squad to the active roster, and the team also elevated outside linebacker Keyshawn James-Newby and safety Cole Wisniewski from the practice squad for the Sunday game.
