Eagles Rule Out Jalen Hurts Against Panthers After Follow-Up Scan Shows Blood Clot Movement

The Philadelphia Eagles announced on Thursday that quarterback Jalen Hurts will miss Sunday's game against the Carolina Panthers after a follow-up ultrasound on Wednesday night showed movement in a superficial blood clot in his calf. The team said Hurts will sit out while the appropriate course of treatment is determined. The announcement gave no timetable for his return beyond the Panthers game.

The timeline started during the October 4 game against the Los Angeles Rams, when Hurts was cleated in the calf. He first requested treatment after practice on October 8 and told the medical staff about the play from the Rams game. He received treatment again on Friday, practiced in full that day, and was added to the practice report. An ultrasound performed on Saturday after the team arrived in London and held its walkthrough first revealed the superficial blood clot. The team medical staff and doctors in London concluded that Hurts could safely play. They recommended a follow-up ultrasound within 72 hours of the game and the return flight to Philadelphia.

Hurts played without limitation on Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars in London. He received treatment on Monday and Tuesday and practiced in full on Wednesday. The Eagles said they remained in communication with the league office throughout their time in London and this week, and the follow-up scan on Wednesday night changed his availability for Sunday.

Tanner McKee is in line to start in place of Hurts on Sunday. Rookie Cole Payton is the other quarterback on the active roster. Veteran Andy Dalton had been on the roster earlier this season and was released on October 9.

The absence adds to a difficult start for Philadelphia, which carries a 2-3 record into the Panthers game and has lost three straight games, including the loss to Jacksonville in London. With no return date announced, Hurts's availability after Sunday remains unresolved and will depend on the treatment course the team is still determining.
