Ohio State Quarterback Julian Sayin Out Several Weeks With Throwing Arm Injury

Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin will miss several weeks with an injury to his throwing arm, a timeline head coach Ryan Day shared after the Buckeyes beat fifth-ranked Indiana 19-15 on Saturday in Bloomington. Day said the staff did not yet have full details on the injury and would build a plan around the backup quarterbacks while Sayin recovers. The update turned a late-game exit in the biggest win of the Ohio State season into a multiweek absence for its starting quarterback.

Sayin was hurt just past the 8-minute mark of the fourth quarter when Indiana defensive tackle Mario Landino drove into his right arm as he threw. The hit jarred the ball loose for a fumble that teammate Phillip Daniels recovered, and Sayin headed to the locker room with the arm hanging limp. He returned to the sideline with 3:35 left in the game wearing a sling on the arm and did not take another snap.

Before leaving, Sayin completed 15 of 29 passes for 235 yards with 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions, including the 38-yard fourth-down touchdown pass to Jeremiah Smith early in the fourth quarter that pushed the Ohio State lead to 19-7. The junior has thrown for 2,007 yards with 19 touchdowns and 4 interceptions this season, one year after he finished fourth in Heisman Trophy voting.

Backup Luke Fahey finished the game and completed none of his 2 pass attempts as the Ohio State defense protected the lead through the final Indiana drive. Ohio State sits at 6-1 and has an off week before a road game at USC on October 31, followed by home games against Oregon and Northwestern, a trip to Nebraska, and the home rivalry game against Michigan. Fahey has completed 9 of 13 passes for 203 yards with 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions in limited action this season, and the off week gives Ohio State extra time to prepare him for a starting role while Sayin is out.

The win snapped the 22-game winning streak of Indiana and its 19-game home winning streak, and it moved Ohio State to 4-0 in Big Ten play. A several-week absence for Sayin now becomes the central question of the Ohio State stretch run, with a playoff race and a conference title race both running through the quarterback position.
