Unranked Auburn Stuns Top-Ranked Georgia 27-24 on Walk-Off Field Goal in Athens
Unranked Auburn stunned top-ranked Georgia 27-24 on Saturday at Sanford Stadium in Athens, winning on a 34-yard field goal from Alex McPherson as time expired. The win was the first for Auburn in Athens since 2005 and its first over Georgia since 2017, and it snapped a nine-game losing streak for the Tigers in the Deep South's Oldest Rivalry.
Georgia built a 14-0 lead on touchdowns on its first 2 possessions before Auburn took control of the game. Auburn tied the score in the second quarter, moved ahead 17-14 at halftime on a 49-yard McPherson field goal, and pushed the margin to 24-14 in the third quarter on a 5-yard touchdown run from quarterback Byrum Brown. The 24 straight points from Auburn silenced a home crowd that had watched Georgia play as the top-ranked team in the country for the first time since September 2024.
Brown carried the Auburn offense on the ground and through the air. He completed 15 of 26 passes for 150 yards and 1 touchdown, and he rushed for 115 yards and 1 touchdown on 26 carries. Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton completed 22 of 34 passes for 272 yards and 2 touchdowns, and he led the late rally that pulled the Bulldogs even. A 42-yard field goal from Peyton Woodring cut the Auburn lead to 24-17, and Stockton capped a 13-play, 94-yard drive with a 4-yard touchdown pass to London Humphreys that tied the game at 24-24 with 2:58 left.
The tie lasted until the final minute. Stockton lost a fumble with 58 seconds left while Georgia was driving for a potential go-ahead score, Auburn recovered the ball, and a penalty on Georgia helped move the Tigers into field goal range. McPherson then drilled the 34-yard kick as time expired to finish the upset. Stockton finished with 3 turnovers, including 2 interceptions to go with the late fumble.
The loss is the first of the season for Georgia, which falls to 6-1 overall and 4-1 in SEC play, and it is the first Georgia loss to an unranked team since 2019. Auburn improves to 4-2 overall and 2-2 in SEC play under first-year head coach Alex Golesh, with a signature win that reshapes the top of the SEC race. Georgia now heads into an open date on its schedule before it plays Florida on October 31 in Atlanta.
