NBA: A scary night in Oklahoma City, a thin bench in Los Angeles, and seven games tonight
Oklahoma City got its first preseason win on Tuesday night, and the celebration came with a hold-your-breath moment attached to it. Rookie guard Otega Oweh went down with a non-contact injury in the opening minute of overtime against Indiana, grabbed the back of his right ankle, and needed his teammates to carry him to the locker room. Oweh scored 8 points and grabbed 3 rebounds in 15 minutes before the injury, and he entered the night averaging 6.3 points and 5.6 rebounds in the preseason. Oklahoma City picked him 41st overall in the 2026 draft and signed him to a two-way deal. No official diagnosis had been announced as of Wednesday afternoon, so the Thunder wait, and the whole building waits with them.
The Los Angeles Clippers keep taking hits before the real games even start. Head coach Tyronn Lue said on Tuesday that Brandon Ingram is increasing his activity in practice and doing more on the floor, and Lue also made clear that Ingram is still a while away from returning to game action. Ingram is recovering from surgery in May for a partially torn Achilles, and he will miss the start of the regular season. Max Strus suffered a partial tear of the plantar fascia in his right foot five minutes into the preseason opener, and he will also miss the start of the season while the foot is re-evaluated in the coming weeks. Bradley Beal is managing inflammation in his right knee, and second-year center Yanic Konan Niederhauser is out with a foot issue. The Clippers host Denver tonight at 10:30 ET, and their training room currently has a better rotation than their bench does.
The rest of the Wednesday slate is loaded for a preseason night. Charlotte plays at Boston at 7:30 ET, and Brooklyn plays at Miami at 7:30 ET in the preseason finale for both teams. Phoenix plays at San Antonio at 8 ET, Detroit plays at Minnesota at 8 ET, New Orleans plays at Dallas at 8 ET, and Chicago plays at Milwaukee at 8 ET. Brooklyn brings a 3-0 preseason record into Miami, while the Heat sit at 2-1 and will play without Dru Smith, Keshad Johnson, Kylor Kelley, and Pelle Larsson. One week from opening night, the dress rehearsals are almost over, and the injury report is suddenly the most honest scouting report in the league.

MLB: Hollywood with its back against the wall, and a Game 3 decision still open in Cleveland
The National League Championship Series moves to Los Angeles tonight, and the Dodgers are out of margin for error. Milwaukee leads the series 2-0 after a 2-1 win in Game 1 and a 7-4 win in Game 2, and the Brewers held Los Angeles to 10 hits and five runs across the two games in Milwaukee. Game 3 is scheduled tonight at 8 ET on FS1 at Dodger Stadium, with Blake Snell starting for Los Angeles and Robert Gasser starting for Milwaukee. Snell went 4-1 with a 1.90 earned run average in the regular season, and Gasser went 5-5 with a 3.87 earned run average. Milwaukee has not reached the World Series since 1982, and two more wins send the Brewers back. Los Angeles is chasing a third straight championship, and a loss tonight puts that chase one defeat from finished.
The American League side gets a travel day before the spotlight shifts on Thursday. Tampa Bay and Cleveland are tied 1-1 in the American League Championship Series, and Game 3 is scheduled for Thursday, October 15 at 6 ET at Progressive Field in Cleveland. Griffin Jax will start Game 3 for Tampa Bay after moving from the bullpen into the rotation in late April and making 23 starts during the regular season. Cleveland had not announced its Game 3 starter as of Wednesday morning, with ace Gavin Williams the presumed choice and Tanner Bibee available as an option if the club gives Williams an extra day of rest. One error decided Game 2 on Tuesday night, and one pitching decision might decide Game 3, which is exactly how October likes its drama served.
The managerial carousel added a big Texas name this morning. Houston announced that the club will not renew the contract of manager Joe Espada, whose deal expires at the end of October. Espada went 256-229 across three seasons as manager, won the American League West in 2024 and again in 2026, and never won a postseason series in the job. Houston finished the regular season at 81-81, won its division, and then lost its Wild Card series against the Chicago White Sox. The Astros built a decade on stability, and they just walked into winter looking for a new voice in the dugout and a new general manager at the same time.

NFL: Quarterbacks trending back, a secondary trending down, and a suspension that sticks
Baltimore might get its most important player back after only one week away. Reports on Wednesday morning indicated that quarterback Lamar Jackson has a realistic chance to play on Sunday at Cleveland after missing Week 5 with a sprained left ankle. Jackson was injured during the Week 4 win against Tennessee, did not play in the second half of that game, and did not practice last week. Through four games this season he has completed 70.8 percent of his passes for 967 yards with six touchdowns and one interception, and he has rushed for 144 yards and one touchdown. Tyler Huntley filled in with 24 completions in 32 attempts for 201 yards and two touchdowns in the 30-23 overtime win at Atlanta, and Baltimore's first injury report of the week arrives later on Wednesday. A realistic chance is not a green light, and Cleveland week just got a whole lot more interesting either way.
Chicago is trending toward a return of its own. Quarterback Caleb Williams is poised to return on Sunday against Atlanta after missing three games with a Grade 2 hamstring injury suffered in Week 2 against Minnesota. Williams returned to limited practice last Friday and was inactive for Week 5 against Green Bay, and reports this week point toward him starting against the Falcons. Atlanta has a quarterback question from the other direction, since Michael Penix Jr. was knocked out late in Sunday's loss to Baltimore with a rib injury and backup Tua Tagovailoa finished the game in overtime. Penix expects to play on Sunday, and his status will shape a matchup where both teams spent the week watching their starter more than their playbook.
Denver's secondary is running out of healthy bodies before Thursday night. Safety Talanoa Hufanga injured his ankle in the third quarter of Sunday's 23-17 win against the Los Angeles Chargers, and the initial belief is that he could miss a week or two, with the injury not considered severe. Hufanga did not practice on Tuesday, cornerback Patrick Surtain II also did not practice with an ankle injury, and cornerback Riley Moss was limited with a rib injury. Devon Key filled in for Hufanga on Sunday and would be the next man up across from Brandon Jones. Seattle visits Denver on Thursday at 8:15 ET, and Jaxon Smith-Njigba has been limited in practice this week with an ankle injury of his own. Thursday night football, brought to you by athletic tape and optimism.
San Francisco will play its Monday night game without a defensive starter, and it is not because of an injury. Linebacker Dre Greenlaw lost his appeal of a one-game suspension without pay, and he will miss the Monday, October 19 game against Washington in Santa Clara. The suspension followed his ejection from Sunday's 32-29 win against Seattle, and Greenlaw ranks second on the team with 37 tackles this season. The 49ers enter the game at 5-0, while Washington arrives at 1-3-1. Green Bay offered a smaller update of its own on Wednesday, since edge rusher Micah Parsons will not practice this week and his return from a torn ACL is still viewed as a Week 8 or Week 9 possibility at the earliest. The Packers host Dallas on Sunday night, and the reunion game will happen without the guest of honor on the field.

NCAAF: A dream season in Los Angeles loses its quarterback, and Wednesday night football fills the gap
The best story in college football just took its hardest hit of the season. Reports this week say UCLA quarterback Nico Iamaleava is expected to miss the rest of the season with a knee injury suffered during Saturday's 17-15 win at Oregon, and one report identified the injury as a torn ACL. Head coach Bob Chesney has said the program is still waiting on the medical staff for a final call, and UCLA has not announced an official timeline, so the reported expectation and the official word are not the same thing yet. Iamaleava completed 10 of 17 passes for 162 yards with two interceptions before leaving the game, and he sat out the entire second half. Senior backup Ty Dieffenbach, a Cal Poly transfer, finished the upset with 3 completions in 6 attempts for 43 yards and one touchdown, and Chesney said Dieffenbach has earned the right to start. UCLA is ranked 12th at 5-0, and the Bruins host Wisconsin on Saturday at 7:30 ET on NBC. A playoff dream built on defense and nerve now hands the keys to the backup, and the whole country gets to watch him turn them.
Alabama has a receiver problem heading into its rivalry trip. Wide receiver Ryan Coleman-Williams suffered a knee injury and a head injury during Saturday's 20-17 loss to Georgia, and head coach Kalen DeBoer said on Monday that there is a good chance Coleman-Williams does not play on Saturday at Tennessee. Coleman-Williams left the field with help in the second quarter, returned for the opening series of the second half, and left again in the fourth quarter after a hit to the helmet on a catch attempt. Alabama plays at Tennessee on Saturday at 3:30 ET, and the Third Saturday in October rarely needs extra stakes, yet here they are anyway.
The midweek slate keeps the couch warm until Saturday. Kennesaw State plays at Missouri State tonight at 7:30 ET on CBS Sports Network, and both teams enter at 1-4 while searching for a first Conference USA win. Western Kentucky plays at Sam Houston tonight at 8 ET on ESPN, with Western Kentucky at 2-4 after a 34-13 win against Missouri State and Sam Houston at 1-4 on a three-game losing streak. The halfway point of the season also has its cautionary tales, since Oregon sits at 3-2 and LSU sits at 4-2 after both opened the year with playoff expectations. October does not grade on a curve, and the second half starts tonight.

CBB: Florida owns the SEC on paper, and Kentucky starts with something to prove
The Southeastern Conference released its preseason media poll, and the league belongs to Florida until somebody takes it away. The Gators were picked first, followed by Texas in second and Arkansas in third. Tennessee was picked fourth, Alabama was picked fifth, Vanderbilt was picked sixth, and Kentucky was picked seventh. Florida forward Thomas Haugh was named the Preseason Player of the Year in the league voting. Florida returns four of five starters from a team that earned a top seed in the NCAA Tournament last season, and the Gators also placed Haugh and center Rueben Chinyelu on the All-SEC First Team. A separate USA TODAY Sports Network poll also picked Florida first and named Haugh its Player of the Year, so the target on the Gators is unanimous from every direction.
Kentucky's spot in the poll is the headline hiding in plain sight. The Wildcats were picked seventh after finishing 22-14 overall and 10-8 in league play last season, and forward Milan Momcilovic earned a spot on the All-SEC Second Team while center Malachi Moreno landed on the Third Team. Arkansas checked in third with guard Jordan Smith Jr. on the Second Team and forward Billy Richmond III on the Third Team, and Texas took second behind a strong transfer class and the return of center Matas Vokietaitis. Most SEC teams open the regular season on November 2, and conference play opens on January 2. Paper season is nearly over, and seventh place has never looked so motivated.
That is the Afternoon Edition. Five sports, zero filler. See you tonight.
