NBA: Cut day arrives, and the top pick leaves with an ice pack

The Washington Wizards open the regular season at home against Milwaukee on Wednesday, and their biggest question is suddenly an ankle. First overall pick AJ Dybantsa rolled his left ankle in the second quarter of the preseason finale against New Orleans on Friday and left after scoring 12 points in 15 minutes. Head coach Brian Keefe described the injury as a minor ankle sprain after the game, and Dybantsa is set for further evaluation before the opener.

Orlando made its roster math official after closing the preseason with a 136-115 win over Miami on Friday, waiving Malaki Branham, JD Davison and Kevin Knox II. The win pushed Orlando to 3-1 in the preseason, and the celebration came with a crowded training room. Franz Wagner left the game with soreness in his right arm, Jase Richardson exited with a sore lower back, and Noah Penda departed with right hamstring tightness.

Oklahoma City still has a two-way decision to make before opening night after rookie Otega Oweh tore his right Achilles tendon in a preseason game against Indiana on Tuesday. The Thunder announced the injury on Wednesday and said Oweh had surgery and will miss the entire 2026-27 season, which leaves a two-way spot the club could fill with a healthy player. In Golden State, head coach Steve Kerr confirmed that Brandon Williams, Georges Niang and Charles Bassey will all be on the roster for the opener against the Los Angeles Lakers, with Bassey set for a real frontcourt role while Kristaps Porzingis is out.

Cut day is the coldest day on the NBA calendar, and this year it handed an ice pack to the top pick on the way out.

MLB: The rain is gone, the pitchers are set, and Cleveland can smell the World Series

The American League Championship Series resumes tonight at Progressive Field after rain postponed Game 4 on Friday night, with Cleveland holding a 2-1 lead over Tampa Bay. First pitch is set for 8:08 ET on TBS, and both clubs kept their pitching plans through the washout. Shawn Armstrong will open a bullpen game for Cleveland, and Nick Martinez starts for Tampa Bay. Petey Halpin hit the two-run home run that lifted Cleveland to a 3-2 win in Game 3 on Thursday, and one more Guardians win tonight moves Cleveland within a single victory of the World Series.

The rainout also erased the breathing room in the series. Game 5 is now set for Sunday at 5 ET in Cleveland, with Game 6 on Monday and Game 7 on Tuesday in St. Petersburg if the series gets that far. Milwaukee waits on the other side of the bracket with home-field advantage, and the World Series opens on Friday, October 23 at 8 ET in Milwaukee on Fox.

Cleveland waited out the rain for a full day, and Tampa Bay gets exactly one dry night to change the story.

NFL: Saturday brought the Hurts answer, and two receivers are racing back

Philadelphia will keep Jalen Hurts on the active roster while he is sidelined with a superficial blood clot in his calf, with reports on Saturday saying the Eagles have no plan to place their starting quarterback on injured reserve. Hurts is out for Sunday against Carolina, Tanner McKee will start, and no return date has been set. The Eagles also added quarterback Joe Milton III from the Dallas practice squad and placed running back Will Shipley on injured reserve on Friday, a pair of moves that says plenty about how long the club is preparing to improvise.

New England is expected to activate wide receiver A.J. Brown from injured reserve on Saturday and have him available on Sunday against the New York Jets. Brown has missed four games with a high-ankle sprain and returned to practice this week. Baltimore is working the same door in its own division race, as rookie receiver Ja'Kobi Lane is expected to be activated from injured reserve on Saturday after a full week of practice, and the Ravens listed him as questionable on Friday with a wrist injury. Lane would give backup quarterback Tyler Huntley another target in his second straight start, with Lamar Jackson ruled out on Friday because of an ankle injury and Baltimore set to face Cleveland on Sunday.

Pittsburgh has a different kind of receiver problem. DK Metcalf missed practice on Friday with an illness and is questionable for Sunday against Tampa Bay, and the Steelers have already ruled out Roman Wilson and Ben Skowronek while Michael Pittman Jr. remains on injured reserve. Aaron Rodgers could be throwing to a very short bench if Metcalf cannot go.

Half the league is playing its Sunday game on Saturday now, and the inactive lists are doing the scouting.

NCAAF: The noon window is live, and the rest of the day is a screen shortage

The biggest game of the day kicked off first, with fourth-ranked Ohio State visiting fifth-ranked Indiana at 12 ET on FOX in Bloomington. Ohio State arrived at 5-1, and Indiana arrived at 6-0 with a 22-game team winning streak, in a rematch of the Big Ten championship game from last season. Florida at Texas and Mississippi State at LSU filled out a noon window that offered nobody a warmup act.

The 3:30 ET window is a four-screen problem. Auburn visits first-ranked Georgia in the Deep South's Oldest Rivalry on ESPN, with Georgia at 6-0 and riding nine straight wins in the series. Alabama plays at Tennessee on ABC, Missouri plays at Ole Miss on the SEC Network, and Arizona State plays at Texas Tech on FOX, with Penn State at Michigan on CBS standing by for anyone with a fifth screen and no fear.

The night window closes the show with second-ranked Notre Dame at eighth-ranked BYU at 7:30 ET on ABC in Provo. Florida State plays at third-ranked Miami at 7 ET on ESPN, Kentucky plays at Oklahoma at 7:30 ET on the SEC Network, and Nebraska at Oregon kicks off at 11 ET on FOX for the fans who treat midnight like a starting time.

Six ranked-versus-ranked games in one Saturday is not a schedule, it is a survival exercise for remote batteries everywhere.

CBB: Exhibitions are underway, and Kentucky opens with a win and a short bench

Kentucky opened its exhibition schedule on Friday night with a win over Little Rock at Rupp Arena, playing without Kam Williams, Trent Noah and Jerone Morton because of injuries. The Wildcats continue the preseason slate on Friday, October 23, when Texas Tech visits Rupp Arena for a 7 ET tip on SEC Network Plus, and the regular season opens on November 3 against Manhattan.

The week also brought a sad note in Lexington, as Kentucky announced that Cliff Hagan died on Thursday at the age of 94. Hagan won a national championship as a Kentucky player and later served as the athletics director at his school, a career that covered just about every chair in the building.

Around the country, the preseason calendar keeps filling in. Big 12 media days are set for Tuesday and Wednesday at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, where Arizona starts the winter as the league favorite after topping the preseason coaches poll. Exhibition games dot the Saturday schedule across the country as rosters take their first public test drives of the fall.

The games do not count yet, and everybody in every gym is acting like they do, which is exactly how October should feel.

That is the Afternoon Edition. Five sports, zero filler. See you tonight.
