NBA camp check-in: Miami starts its Giannis era, New York protects its title

The Heat are learning a new system around Giannis Antetokounmpo, while the champion Knicks sort out their bench. Philadelphia’s new stars, Detroit’s negotiations and San Antonio’s guards add to the camp story.

September’s roster announcements are becoming basketball decisions. For Miami, training camp is about fitting a transformed team together. For New York, the challenge is different: keep a championship core working while replacing an important reserve.

Elsewhere, Philadelphia is bringing new stars together, Detroit is negotiating with Jalen Duren, and San Antonio has three talented guards competing for backcourt roles as the October 20 season opener approaches.

Miami: learning the system before measuring the ceiling

After Miami’s second camp practice Wednesday at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Antetokounmpo described adjusting to the Heat’s movement and spacing rules as a major part of his transition. ClutchPoints’ Zachary Weinberger reported his comments from camp. Antetokounmpo also spoke positively about the competition and the group’s early work together.

The surrounding roster helps explain why that adjustment matters. Miami acquired Antetokounmpo from Milwaukee during the offseason and signed Klay Thompson after Thompson’s Dallas buyout. Bam Adebayo remains part of the frontcourt. Thompson gives the Heat another perimeter shooting option alongside two players who can put pressure on defenses inside.

HSW view: Miami’s talent is evident, but a familiar name on a new roster does not establish chemistry. Camp gives the Heat time to work out where players move when Antetokounmpo attacks and how the group shares defensive responsibilities.

New York: continuity up front, competition behind it

The Knicks enter the season as defending champions after beating San Antonio 4–1 in the 2026 Finals, their first NBA title since 1973. Following Mitchell Robinson’s departure to Boston, Andre Drummond joined New York’s reserve-center group behind Karl-Anthony Towns.

Wednesday brought another candidate for those minutes. Heavy, citing the team’s announcement, reported that Tony Bradley signed an Exhibit 9 camp contract, giving the veteran an opportunity to compete for a roster spot.

The Knicks separately confirmed a two-way deal for 23-year-old guard Jaden Akins on September 30. Akins averaged 11.3 points across three Summer League games for New York.

Miles McBride’s contract situation adds a separate question for New York. In September 26 coverage, BasketNews relayed his comments to the New York Daily News about his frustration with extension discussions and his wish to stay with the Knicks.

Philadelphia has a different core to organize

The 76ers announced their acquisition of Jaylen Brown on July 6 and their signing of LeBron James on July 27. Both join a roster that includes Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey.

HSW view: The names make Philadelphia a compelling team to follow, but the practical camp work is about roles, possession sharing and combinations. A successful introduction cannot tell us how that group will perform over a full season.

Detroit: Duren’s contract negotiations continue

CBS Sports, citing The Athletic, reported Wednesday that Detroit removed a weight-related condition from its five-year, $200 million offer to restricted free agent Jalen Duren.

The same report said Duren could instead accept a one-year qualifying offer, leaving him with a choice between Detroit’s long-term proposal and a shorter commitment.

San Antonio: three guards, several possible combinations

San Antonio has De’Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper to fit into its backcourt. Harper is entering his second NBA season, while Castle is entering his third.

CBS Sports’ September 28 coverage examined Harper’s push for a larger role after his first postseason.

HSW view: Finding productive combinations and distributing minutes among the three guards will be a central backcourt question during camp.
